The Tunisian Automotive Association (TAA) took part in the discussions surrounding the implementation of Energy Attribute Certificates (EAC) in Tunisia, a key mechanism aimed at supporting the energy transition and structuring the traceability of electricity from renewable sources.
This initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy and several international partners, has taken an important first step with the organization of a strategic workshop in Tunis, bringing together the main players in the energy and industrial sector.
Towards a certification system aligned with international standards
The work carried out in this first phase has made it possible to define the objectives of a future Tunisian system of energy attribute certificates.
The aim is to implement a system that will:
- to meet the voluntary demand for renewable energy
- to strengthen the transparency and traceability of energy consumption
- to align Tunisia with international standards, particularly the EN16325 standard relating to Guarantees of Origin
Such a mechanism constitutes a strategic lever to support companies, particularly industrial ones, in their transition towards more sustainable models that comply with the requirements of international markets.
A key issue for the competitiveness of the automotive industry
In a context of decarbonizing global value chains, the implementation of EACs represents a major challenge for the Tunisian automotive industry.
It will allow companies in the sector to:
- to demonstrate their commitment to renewable energy consumption
- to meet the ESG requirements of international clients
- to strengthen their competitiveness and attractiveness
TAA's participation in this work is fully in line with its mission to support manufacturers towards international environmental and energy standards .
An evolving regulatory framework
The discussions also helped to identify several areas for development in the Tunisian regulatory framework in order to guarantee the implementation of a system:
- reliable
- transparent
- robust
Various scenarios have been proposed to structure this future system, which will be the subject of further work during the second phase of the project.
A multi-stakeholder mobilization in service of the energy transition
The workshop brought together a broad ecosystem of institutional, industrial and international stakeholders, including:
- the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
- the European External Action Service
- the Mediterranean Renewable Energy Center
- the National Agency for Energy Management
- the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company
As well as several industrial players, including the TAA, represented during the panels by Malek Ammar , testifying to the commitment of the automotive sector to energy issues.
Accelerating the energy and industrial transition in Tunisia
Through this initiative, Tunisia is taking a structuring step towards the establishment of a renewable energy certificate market , aligned with international best practices.
For the TAA, this dynamic represents a strategic lever for:
- supporting the decarbonization of the automotive industry
- strengthen integration into global value chains
- to position Tunisia as a sustainable industrial hub between Europe and Africa
